Harakeke

Maaori name Harakeke
Common name New Zealand flax
Botanical name phorium tenax

It is found in lowland swamps

Harakeke leaves are used for  broken limbs, strapping sore backs, tying baby umbilical cords, sewing stitches and binding cuts and wounds.

The juice of the root was drunk with the oil of kohia berry to treat flatulence.

To treat constipation, the harakeke root was used. This purified the blood.

Harakeke gum was used for wounds, burns, sunburn, minor cuts, cracked skin and toothache.

Harakeke gum is stuffed into the holes in teeth too.
